He was planning to get to heaven
About six-thirty or seven
The choice wasn't mere whim
The faithful gathered near him
Waiting for his body to rise again

CHORUS

Father Divine
Father Divine
Father Divine
Father Divine

Hellfire hath no fury
When you're not in a big hurry
Daddy Grace may help you
He's been through this test, too
Waiting for his soul to rise again

CHORUS

SOLO

Everyone thought he'd return
He couldn't thank them for their concern
He never came back
That religious maniac
Waiting for his body to rise again

CHORUS

ABOUT FATHER DIVINE

Father Divine was a real, actual person. What, you say? No one makes such claims about immortality -- unless you're Connor or Duncan MacLeod, right? Thought by some scholars to be one of the first religious cults, Father Divine and his congregation reached ultimate popularity in the 1930-1950's in New York City. "One of my mom's friends told me about this guy over lunch and we just frankly couldn't believe it. She said he drove around in fancy cars, wore expensive clothes and said he did it all for the people. I couldn't help but think of Richard Pryor in 'Car Wash,'" laughed the Diva.
